74-Year-Old Gracie Barra Student Earns BJJ Brown Belt

What’s that saying about age and numbers, again?

Roberto Aguilar has taken the next big step in his jiu-jitsu journey after earning his BJJ brown belt at age 74.

The Gracie Barra student, who earned his purple belt at age 72 and his blue belt at age 70, was promoted Saturday morning by Romulo Barral, marking another major milestone in his BJJ journey.

Aguilar, who’s been training about five and a half years, told the Jiu-Jitsu Times that health and the ability to protect himself in his advanced age “at a time when you become the most vulnerable” have been the main motivators driving him to continue training on a regular basis.

He told the Jiu-Jitsu Times, “I love the feeling after I’ve trained hard… there’s nothing quite like it. It isn’t easy all the time. the bottom line is it comes down to desire. And just because you get older, there’s no reason to stop or to give up on anything… it just changes, and you have to change with it. I want to get better at jiu-jitsu with the time I have left.”
