This Single Mom Of 4 Kids With Special Needs Lost Over 120lbs Through Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-jitsu has frequently proven itself to be a powerful catalyst for weight loss, and no one knows this better than Australian blue belt Libby Chick. Chick, a 48-year-old single mother, has four children, all of them with special needs (“Autism, complex PTSD, dyslexia, and ADHD in various combinations,” she says). For years, she had settled into a life that left her overweight and mostly inactive, but then, she took a jiu-jitsu class, and everything changed.

Since she began her journey, Chick has lost an astonishing 119lbs (54kg), and in the process, she’s gained a passion that has improved multiple areas of her life.

Jiu-jitsu didn’t just help Chick lose an entire person’s worth of weight — it changed how she sees herself. “As the stories I told myself about what was possible changed, I changed,” she says. “I’ve never been fitter or stronger. I’ve never played so hard and laughed so much. I climb mountains and I dance and swim, and I know I can work really hard, and progress towards mastery in BJJ and in life. I have amazing friends and training partners who push me and inspire me. I’m part of amazing local and national communities. The story I tell myself now? Anything is possible.”

Check out this inspiring interview that Chick (who trains under Paul Sayers at Saber BJJ in Hobart) gave to a radio station shortly after beginning her BJJ journey. She’s lost even more weight since the interview aired, but the sentiment remains the same:
