6. Pay attention to the other contestants who compete before it’s your turn. This will help with your perspective of the kind of moves they’re making. Knowing how the others move on the mat and what techniques they use will help you if you should meet them in later matches.
7. If possible, have your instructor or at least a team mate on the sidelines helping to coach you. That will be a great advantage because they can see things you may not be aware of with your moves or your opponent’s moves. You will then have a chance to change your game if necessary.
8. You may expect your mouth to get dry once you’re on the mat, possibly from nerves. Have water available and take little sips here and there without drinking too much. Do not drink orange juice the day of the match in case it makes you nauseous.
9. bring flip flops or sandals for walking around the tournament. Your feet should only be bare when you are on the mat. Walking anywhere else in bare feet is not sanitary.
10. The night before the match, do some meditation or yoga exercises to help you relax and get a good night’s sleep. It will be a long day and having your mind clear and your body rested will give you a head start for the day of the match and help you give your best performance.
I don't think that many tournaments require a mouth piece.
Mine encouraged them, but they weren't a requirement. I'm sure the IBJJF does though.
11. Have fun!
the sleep thing works 2 days in advance. so if the tourney is on saturday, the restful night's sleep should be the thursday night beforehand. and go to bed an hour earlier than normal, rather than sleeping in an hour later.
Noone requires you a mouthpiece, even IBJF!

Couple accidental knees to the face made it a requirement for me.
FTW! This one alone took away some of my nerves. Why are we even doing jiu-jitsu? 🙂
Micayla Presley I competed at the IBJJF Las Vegas and Long Beach opens this year, and neither had me use a mouth piece? Maybe it depends on the Ref you get?
I wasn't sure. I've never done IBJJF before. I hate rolling with it though.
