Mica Galvão earned gold at the BJJ Stars Middleweight Grand Prix on Saturday night, as he defeated 3 opponents in the 8-man all-star tournament.
Galvão, a rising star who is demanding our attention, was given test after test and was paired up against multi-time world champion Leandro Lo in the first round, who Galvão narrowly defeated by a 1-0 advantage. Galvão spent most of the match playing guard, and an armbar attempt earned him the advantage victory.
Galvão’s semi-final match was stopped abruptly when Mauricio Oliveira appeared to injure his knee and was forced to forfeit from the remainder of the match.
In the finals, Galvão faced off against ‘Hulk’ Barbosa from Atos jiu-jitsu. As the pair spent a majority of their time on the feet working for a takedown, it was a brief scramble at the end of regulation that put Mica onto the back of ‘Hulk’ with both hooks in. Galvão attacked the bow and arrow choke and earned the tap along with a R$100,000(Brazilian Real) grand prize, a roughly US$20,000 value.
