Marcelo Cohen Defeats Spencer Mumme At Sapateiro 11

After a lot of trash-talking, six-time Sapateiro veteran Spencer Mumme and EBI veteran Marcelo Cohen finally had their all-subs-legal, no-time-limit gi match. And when it was all over, Cohen had defeated his rival.

Both competitors dropped to the floor and “butt scooted” as soon as the match began. Mumme attempted a leg lock, but Cohen was able to get out and close his opponent up in his guard. Although Mumme initially managed to keep his base, Cohen eventually managed to sweep him and trap him in an armbar to win the match and money.

Cohen posted about his victory on Facebook, and he wasn’t about to forgive Mumme for the insults:

After months of keeping quiet after being called out and publicly ridiculed on Facebook the day finally came. Time for me to do what I do best and show what Jiu Jitsu is really about. The toxicity leading up to this fight was down right disrespectful. That is not what this sport is about. I will always let my Jiu Jitsu speak for itself, stay humble and quiet and show what I have on the mat. If you want to call people out you need to first make sure you’re on the same level or you just end up getting put in your place. Thanks my students and sponsors Furia Jiu-Jitsu Sports and NEWBREED ULTIMATE CHALLENGE for believing in me

Spencer, however, congratulated his opponent on his win:

Today was overall exciting. An amazing set of matches. I myself after all of the hype I put into this match did not come back with the win. It was a good match starting off quick fighting for grips and dominating guard. With my attempts at attacking being defended well, Cohen was able to implement his very potent closed guard, with a pendulum sweep attempt my reaction and his grips lead to me being armbarred, much respect to my opponent for his skill set today. He was the better man today on the mat.
Losses do not break me.
They inspire me to learn and grow.
Why do we Fall Bruce?
To learn how to pick ourselves back up..
See y’all again soon, back to the lab!
A special thanks to Gracie Brandon and Gracie Tampa South Martial Arts for the training and insight. And a special thanks to Erin Harpe and Luis MataRobby Donofrio and Ian Murray for being my best friends and supporting me through this!

Mumme’s response changed Cohen’s opinion — somewhat. In a private message to the Jiu-Jitsu Times, Marcelo said that he found the post “humble” and hoped Spencer would change the way he approaches fights in the future.

I think it was humble and I hope he change the way to approach a fight in his future. Bjj is about respect.

Promoter Josh Leduc had this to say about the event:

“The match definitely lived up to the hype. The crowd was wired when they got on the mat. Spencer attacked first with a heel hook from ashi Garami and then Marcelo countered and hit a beautiful armbar from closed guard. After the match the bad blood didn’t die out. Both teams have taken to social media to voice their displeasures with the other side. I think I have some more matches to make.”
Here are the full results:
Marcelo won by armbar
Quentin won by outside heel hook
Jose Lauger won by sub in OT
Tony Way won by quickest escape
Werther Marciales won by inside heel hook
Mike Lugo won by armbar
Joey Lugo won by shoulder lock
Savonnah Devoucoux won by fastest escape
Kevin Cross won by triangle
Burak Cakir won by toe hold
Kagan Pierce won by d’arce
