Former Bellator Champ Daniel Straus Arrested After Allegedly Striking & Stabbing Woman

Former Bellator champion Daniel Straus was arrested on Friday and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to an original report from The Sun Sentinel.

Straus’ bond was set for $100,000 at a hearing last Saturday, with the judge declining to lower it and saying, “If he’s a former professional athlete, he can get a bond for $10,000.”

According to MMA Junkie, which obtained the affidavit, Straus and the alleged victim had been in an “on and off intimate relationship” for the past three years. The incident in question reportedly occurred on January 21, when an argument surrounding “infidelity issues” began over text message between Straus and the woman. The woman said that Straus then went to her workplace and followed her to her car and entered through the passenger-side door when she got into the driver’s seat to try to “separate herself” from him.

The alleged victim then got out of the car and says that Straus followed her. The argument then escalated, and it’s then that the woman says that Straus shoved her, and she shoved him back. According to the affidavit, the woman then tried to get back into her car, and Straus “struck” her multiple times, knocking her to the ground.

The woman told the police that Straus then left in his vehicle and called her, saying that he was at her apartment. The alleged victim says that she then went to Straus’ apartment to retrieve a spare key that he had in his possession, concerned that he would damage her property. Straus was apparently at his own apartment, and an argument about the key ensued, followed by Straus trying to push the woman out the door. The alleged victim says that Straus then told her, “You don’t know me, I’ll stab you,” and she replied, “You’re big and bad. What are you going to do, stab me?”

The affidavit says that Straus then reached behind him and pulled out a sharp object, which couldn’t be identified by the alleged victim due to the speed at which the incident happened, and stabbed the woman in the abdomen. The woman told police that Straus followed her briefly as she fled the apartment, but that Straus ultimately went back inside his apartment.

The woman got help from neighbors and was taken to the hospital, where she was “received a few stitches to close the puncture wound.” She also had a contusion on her right eye.

Though the alleged victim initially declined to speak to a responding detective, she later said that she would press charges against Straus and cooperate with law enforcement, adding that she “is in complete fear of the defendant and feels that if he is not apprehended that he will come after her and cause further harm to her for notifying the police.”

According to Yahoo Sports, Straus had previously been imprisoned for three years on robbery charges, being released in 2007.
