Garry Tonon Could Be Returning To MMA As Early As May, Wants Shinya Aoki Rematch In Future

Garry Tonon — fresh off of his huge MMA debut win last week at ONE Championship’s Iron Will — was on The MMA Hour just moments ago with Ariel Helwani.

Despite having injured his wrist at his fight, Tonon said he could be fighting as early as May, though he felt mid-June would be a more realistic return date for him. He may fight in Beijing for his next match.

Helwani also asked Tonon whom he’d like to fight for his “dream” match. Tonon gave two answers.

The first was ONE’s reigning Lightweight and Featherweight Champion Martin Nguyen, whose name Tonon struggled to remember. Nguyen fought in the main event at Iron Will, where he was close to being the promotion’s first three-division champion.

The other name Tonon brought up was former ONE Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki, whom Garry fought in a grappling match for his ONE debut. This time, though, Garry would want to fight Shinya in an MMA match.

Naturally, the topic of fighting for an American promotion came up in the conversation. Tonon said that, as of now, he was happy with ONE and was focused on getting experience in mixed martial arts.

He did not, however, close the doors on fighting for an American promotion.

Could we see Garry Tonon in the UFC cage within the next three or four years? Why not?
