Student With Down Syndrome Receives Blue Belt, Proves Jiu-Jitsu Truly Is For Everyone

Jordan Bollhofer has no excuses!

The BJJ student who trains at Relentless Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Warsaw, Indiana, has won two NAGA belts and numerous awards from other competitions…and he has done it all while battling Down Syndrome!

Recently, the co-owner and Head Instructor of Relentless Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, David Sumpter, had the honor of rewarding Jordan for all of his hard work by promoting him to blue belt.

Coach Sumpter wrote to the Jiu-Jitsu Times to tell us about his amazing student:

My name is David Sumpter co-owner / Head Instructor of Relentless Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Warsaw, Indiana. I wanted to share a story about one of my students. His name is Jordan Bollhofer; He has been attending classes with us since December of 2009. Jordan started off taking Zanshindo / Mixed Martial Arts classes where he has achieved the level of Brown belt / Green shirt. He has competed in multiple grappling tournaments. His fruition of these events have left him with Two NAGA title belts and numerous battle axes from extreme grappling open (EGO) events. This man is an inspiration to everyone here with his Relentless family. He shows that Jiu-jitsu is truly for everyone with his positive attitude, attention to detail and always trying to get actively better each day. He fights multiple battles, one is with jiu-jitsu being hard and the other is that Jordan has Down- Syndrome, but he does not let that stop him. He keeps fighting and improving daily. He has taught me that we as a society need to help people overcome learning disabilities by trying new things that challenge us and have people that are willing to help with the hard times instead of running from them. Sometimes Jordan’s social anxiety gets in his way, but again he pushes through. He is aware of it and battles with it. He knows that it strengthens him each time he pushes through. Jordan started grappling and doing GI Brazilian jiu-jitsu class a little over a year ago and the progression that I have seen in him has been leaps and bounds. With this little insight to Jordan I want to introduce you all to one of the newest Blue belts @ Relentless Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and give him a huge Congratulations.

You can check out the video of Jordan’s promotion below:

We here at the Jiu-Jitsu Times would like to congratulate Jordan on his promotion and for proving to all of our readers that BJJ truly is for everyone!

  1. How is he “battling” Down syndrome? They also do not “suffer” from Downs. It is not a broken leg or a gunshot. Do you also say that African Americans “suffer” from being black? Do Asians “suffer or battle” being yellow? Try not to be so racist and such a bigot. Wait. I understand now. You suffer from being a man. So I guess I can excuse your stupidity. You must “suffer” alot.
