Teen Jessa Khan Wins Gold at Purple Belt Weeks After Promotion

For the few–truly sad, Dead Sea-level salty–haters who raised eyebrows at the news that a 16-year-old had been promoted to purple belt by the Mendes Brothers last month: That would be the gold medal. You know. First place.

Jessa Khan took the top spot on the IBJJF European championships podium in Lisbon, Portugal, winning the rooster weight purple belt division. The tournament was her first at adult purple belt, coming just weeks after her December 27 promotion out of blue belt at Art of Jiu-Jitsu. Khan had previously won the European championship twice before, and is a three-time winner of the World, World No-Gi, and Pan Am championships.

Second place at rooster weight went to Kaori Asela Hernandez, with Iaetitia Boes and Neto Emile tying for third.

A complete list of winners so far can be found here.

The tournament will continue through January 20th. Updates are forthcoming.
