UFC Vegas 18 Results: Alexander Volkov TKOs Alistair Overeem

The main event of UFC Vegas 18 saw heavyweight fighters Alexander Volkov and Alistair Overeem face off in a brawl that let Volkov showcase his impressive striking skills against the accomplished veteran.

Volkov opened with a leg kick and forced Overeem against the cage, the latter visibly cautious as Volkov threw kicks. Overeem then came forward with some big punches and tried to close the distance with a clinch. Overeem threw an uppercut and followed it up with a kick, then charged in with a punch, which was countered by Volkov. Overeem dropped to the ground and turtled up while Volkov capitalized by throwing some punches before Overeem got back to his feet. As the clock wound down to the final minute of the first round, Volkov again drove Overeem to the cage, landing a few punches and a big knee before Overeem managed to get out of danger. The final twenty seconds of round one saw Volkov again batter his opponent against the fence, adding in another knee for good measure. Overeem went for one last punch as the bell rang.

Volkov was persistent as round two commenced, staying steady with straight punches to control the center of the octagon. Overeem found an opportunity for a clinch, which he used to push Volkov against the cage. Volkov broke free and threw a few more punches, then defended himself as Overeem countered. A jab-cross combo from Volkov staggered Overeem, and Volkov followed up with another combo as he pushed a retreating Overeem against the fence. Overeem broke free, bleeding heavily from the face, and grabbed one of Volkov’s legs for a single-leg attempt. Volkov again broke free and, after defending a punch from Overeem, hit Overeem with a hook that sent him to his hands and knees. There was no need for follow-up — the referee stopped the fight, and Volkov was declared the winner by TKO.
