Instructor Gives His First “Social Distancing Promotion” To New Purple Belt

The lack of jiu-jitsu during the COVID-19 pandemic has left us all missing our coaches and teammates, but one coach went above and beyond to give his student the purple belt he deserved while still practicing social distancing.

Malachy Friedman, black belt and coach at American Top Team Lowcountry in Charleston, SC, felt that his student Billy was at the point where he had earned his purple belt. But then, the coronavirus outbreak happened, and Friedman was unable to give the belt to his deserving student. Rather than waiting an indefinite period of time for the promotion, Friedman went directly to his student’s house, left the belt on his porch, and had him come outside. While the two may have inched a bit too close to satisfy exact social distancing recommendations, there was no physical contact, and Friedman was able to give Billy the promotion he earned during this crazy time.
