He set out to be the best, and here at ADCC, he certainly accomplished that.

Earlier today, Gordon Ryan became the 99kg division champion when he defeated Vinicius Gazola in the finals. But he had no intentions of stopping there.

Later in the day, Ryan entered the absolute division, where he made his mark by making it to the finals to face Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida. The grapplers had a long, exhausting match, unsuccessfully working to get takedowns with neither finding many opportunities to search for submissions. As the clock wound down and the competitors moved into overtime, Buchecha attempted a heel hook, then laughed when he realized he probably wouldn’t be submitting Ryan with a leglock. Buchecha eventually earned a penalty for stalling, which would eventually cost him the match and the absolute title.

In the end, Ryan came away double-champ, just like he’d promised. Next ADCC, he’ll be facing Andre Galvao in the event’s annual superfight.
