Marcelo Garcia has won five jiu-jitsu world championships at black belt level. In 2011, he won an IBJJF tournament and entered the ADCC championship. Upon reaching the semi final, Garcia faced Kron Gracie, who was the son of legendary martial artist Rickson Gracie. Kron had earned his black belt in 2009, and was determined to become a world champion. During the fight, Gracie applied a tight guillotine chokehold. Garcia later confessed that he considered submitting, however he decided instead to continue fighting until he lost consciousness, or managed to free himself. Garcia eventually claimed a points victory, however it was the toughest fight he had ever had.
