Rafael Lovato Jr. Bests Boogey Martinez at World Jiu-Jitsu Festival

Add another “W” to Rafael Lovato Jr.’s record. The veteran Bellator and IBJJF champ took on 10th Planet superstar Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez at the World Jiu-Jitsu Festival on October 5, winning the superfight in 6 minutes. The pair had fifteen minutes on the clock as part of the sub-only competition.

It didn’t take long for Boogey to pull into his comfort zone, working his “weird” guard (his words) for a full three minutes before Lovato found a safe entrance and was able to pass. Lovato transitioned quickly into dominant side control, trying to set up the submission but losing the opening to Martinez’ guard recovery.

There was a brief scramble before Lovato sliced back into side control, where he didn’t make the same error twice–once he locked the kimura grip on Boogey, he cranked that arm like he was trying to start a boat motor and got the tap.

Martinez’s brother, Geo, shows down against Gabriel Sousa later in the festival program.
