F2W 180 Results: Rafael Lovato Jr. & Johnny Tama Come Away With No-Gi Titles

Fight 2 Win returned to Los Angeles for F2W 180, where a night of exciting matches concluded with a welterweight no-gi title match between Edwin Najmi and Johnny Tama, followed by a main event that featured a no-gi light heavyweight title match between Rafael Lovato Jr. and Gabriel Arges.

Co-Main Event

Edwin Najmi vs. Johnny Tama

Najmi started the action by shooting for a takedown, then another. After a small bit of wrestling on the feet, Tama sat guard, and Najmi tried for a knee-cut pass. Tama capitalized by going for a leg attack, but Najmi stepped out of danger. Najmi again went for a pass, and Tama latched onto a leg and went for a heel hook. Najmi framed his way out of immediate danger and tried to stack his way past his opponent’s guard. Tama tried to take the back from the bottom and then went for another leg attack as Najmi stood up. Najmi disengaged and created some distance, then closed it to resume his passing attempts.

About five minutes to go, and Najmi tried again for a knee-cut pass and then dove under for an attempted back take, which Tama evaded and used to transition to another leg attack. Najmi escaped and returned to his feet to try to get past Tama’s guard, lowering himself and briefly attempting an Estima lock. Tama again locked onto a leg and this time went for a straight ankle lock, which was momentarily reciprocated by Najmi. Najmi then pushed his way out and returned to his feet, then sitting back for a more sincere straight ankle lock attempt of his own. Tama fired back with a heel hook, soon abandoning it in favor of escaping his opponent’s attempt.

Najmi again stood up, and Tama elected to continue playing guard. Tama went for one last heel hook attempt with a little over two minutes left, and when he got a bite on it this time, it was only a second or two before Najmi tapped out.

Johnny Tama was declared the winner by submission and claimed the welterweight no-gi title.

Main Event

Rafael Lovato Jr. vs. Gabriel Arges

Arges pulled guard and set up a knee shield, and Lovato worked to pass with his signature heavy pressure. Arges looked for opportunities to gain a better position, ultimately choosing to inch back a bit before returning to the knee shield while Lovato stayed on his knees and tried to pass. Lovato got to his feet with about five and a half minutes remaining, and Arges focused on playing open guard, latching onto a leg and inverting before returning to wrap his legs around his opponent in closed guard. Lovato drove forward, and Arges retaliated by transitioning to k-guard before eventually returning to playing with the knee shield.

With a minute and a half left, Lovato hadn’t managed to pass, but Arges had been unable to do anything from the guard, and the athletes returned to their feet. Arges went for an Imanari roll and ended up with Lovato in closed guard. Thirty seconds to go, and Lovato put the pressure on top of Arges, who tried to elevate him before going back to closed guard. In the last ten seconds, Lovato put on an ankle lock, and though it wasn’t enough to get Arges to tap, it was enough to seal his victory in the eyes of the judges.

Rafael Lovato Jr. was declared the winner by unanimous decision and retained the no-gi light-heavyweight title.
