Gordon Ryan’s Hand Was Fractured Before ADCC

In case you missed it, Gordon Ryan was, um, a bit of a medical mess when he competed at ADCC. In addition to coming off his devastating knee injury from six months earlier, he also had the stomach flu and clearly had an injured hand, as evidenced by the fact that it was wrapped up for the duration of the tournament.

Ryan explained what had caused the injury in an interview with the Jiu-Jitsu Times after he won the absolute bracket:

The injury wasn’t enough to stop Ryan from competing in (or winning) both the 99kg and absolute bracket at ADCC, but it did take him out of the upcoming King of the Mat tournament in Ohio.

While the cause of Ryan’s injury had been revealed, it was only yesterday that we learned the effect of it. Ryan shared a report from his doctor that said that his hand contained a “healed fracture of the fourth metacarpal.” In other words, his hand isn’t fractured now, but it was after the initial accident, and he beat a lot of people at the top grappling tournament in the world.

Ryan wrote on the post that he’ll be having an MRI next week to see if anything is torn, as he’s still having some significant pain in the injured hand. Knowing him, though, it won’t be long until we see him back in action again.
