Maynard James Keenan: Jiu-Jitsu Is ‘Humbling’ Because There’s Always Someone Better Than You

He may be one of the most original and talented acts in music today, but Maynard James Keenan – best known as the singer for Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer – does not let his ego get in the way of his Brazilian jiu-jitsu training.

In an article by TeamRock, Keenan opined that Brazil’s “soft art” is humbling because there is always someone out there better than you.

Jiu-jitsu is about finding your boundaries. It’s a humbling experience, because there’s always somebody who’s much better than you are. If you can get your head around that and accept that and really just be concerned about yourself, learn about your boundaries, learn about your place in the world, then you can exceed and move forward with whatever limitations you have.

Maynard James Keenan was awarded his BJJ purple belt in 2015 from Luis “Limao” Heredia. He has trained with such big names as Rickson Gracie and former UFC bantamweight title contender “Alpha” Cat Zingano, whom he can be seen taking down in this video:
