The topic of suicide is a delicate one, and sadly, it’s one that many of us are all too familiar with. While it’s certainly not an easy subject to talk about, we do need to talk about it more, and that’s why it’s such a big deal when those who have a powerful microphone are candid and open about it.

Tammi Musumeci, a Pan American champion in 2014 and 2017 and a world champion in 2013 and 2015, took it upon herself to use her own voice to speak out on Facebook about a member of the jiu-jitsu community who took their own life. Her message is simple, but powerful, and it’s already resonated with a lot of people.

Even though jiu-jitsu can be helpful when coping with trauma and mental illness, it’s important to remember that if it’s not enough to get you through what you’re dealing with, you should look for additional help. “People always talk about how jiu-jitsu is therapy and stuff, but the truth is a lot of people and myself included need other stuff,” said Musumeci.

Whether it’s seeking talk therapy, getting on medication, or something as simple as messaging a friend like Musumeci suggested, there is always a way to get help. Please don’t give up; someone out there is willing to listen.
