After three years of absence, Para Jiu-Jitsu is proudly back in the program of the biggest and most important Jiu Jitsu championship in the world. On November 11, 2022, the Jiu Jitsu Arena will once again host the absolute elite of Parathletes from all over the globe.

The United Arab Emirates Jiu Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) has once again partnered with the Federação Brasileira de Jiu Jitsu Paradesportivo (FBJJP) to offer the safest and fairest competition environment. Para Jiu Jitsu returns to the 14th Edition of the ADWPJJC after a three-year hiatus.

Athletes will compete in 15 functional classifications designed by the FBJJP and adopted by the UAEJJF. The classes serve the purpose of creating an exciting and safe setting for competitors to showcase their talents on the mats. See here the functional classifications. The official weigh-in and classification of athletes is scheduled November 11, from 11:30AM to 1:30PM.

The registration period for Para Jiu Jitsu competition in the 14th Edition of the ADWPJJC opened on February 1st. The normal registration deadline is September 30th , 2022. The late registration deadline is November 1st, 2022. Click here to register now.

Para Jiu Jitsu and the ADWPJJC: A successful partnership

Para Jiu Jitsu debuted in the ADWPJJC in 2017, in an epic occasion. Competitors from all over the world came to Abu Dhabi on April 14 and awed the crowds with thrilling matches that inspired all of those who witnessed it.

His Excellency Abdulmunan Al Hashemi saluted the athletes on the mats and showed the support they deserve. The President of the UAEJJF made sure to shake the hands of each competitor and assure them that they were home in Abu Dhabi.

The warriors were back in 2018 for an expanded event. Once again, the ADWPJJC welcomed the warriors of Para Jiu Jitsu on April 20-21. The event was so special that it welcomed His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and fierce supporter of the Jiu Jitsu and Para Jiu Jitsu movements in the UAE and the world.

Year three of Para Jiu Jitsu’s presence in Abu Dhabi came on April 21, 2019. Athletes from Brazil to Japan and from the UAE to the USA once again inspired the crowds both on the stands of the Jiu Jitsu Arena and watching on TV and online.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the pause button for events all over the globe. The 12th Edition of the ADWPJJC 2020 was postponed from its intended date of April 2020. Initially rescheduled for November 2020, the event was able to take place only in February 2021.

When it returned, the ADWPJJC had to commit to a reduced schedule and strict health and safety measures. Finally, three years after its last appearance, Para Jiu Jitsu is back. It’s guaranteed to be a glorious occasion once again.

Hard work and dedication brought Para Jiu Jitsu back to the ADWPJJC

Both the UAEJJF and the FBJJP worked really hard to bring Para Jiu Jitsu back to the ADWPJJC. It was a task that demanded around the clock dedication to meet the desired requirements for a safe and fair competition.

Elcirley Luz Silva, President of the FBJJP, praised the initiative by the UAEJJF: “The return of Para Jiu Jitsu is the result of a continuous work of inclusion by the UAEJJF. We expect that lots of lives will be touched in a positive way through the sport that brings the most people with disabilities in the world.”

Professor Mario Edson Silva, Vice-President of the FBJJP and Coordinator of the Rules and Refereeing Commission, talks about the importance of adopting an adequate system of rules for each type of disability: “The work of the FBJJP has been focused on creating the safest possible environment for all athletes. Having internationally recognized institutions as partners, such as the UAEJJF, adopting the system of adapted rules that we created, further reinforces that we are on the right track”.
