313Bjj, an organization founded by Marcelo Garcia black belt Fabio Lima is set to host their inaugural pro show this friday night (9/24/21) at the historical Masonic Temple in Detroit Michigan. The event, dubbed “Grapple in the Temple” features a main event matchup between Mateus Diniz and David Garmo.
The promoter, Fabio Lima, is no stranger to the mats. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1981, he came to New York City in 1993 and started Jiu Jitsu under Renzo Gracie in 2004. In 2009 He started training with Marcelo Garcia until 2015 when he moved to Detroit to the only Marcelo Garcia Association in Michigan. Fabio is a Marcelo Garcia black belt and has competed in many competitions on the national and International stage.
I reached out to Fabio to get his thoughts on this event and the organizational process. This is afterall the first event of its kind to be put on in Detroit.
“I started The Spirit of 313 tournament to help fund the ultimate goal which was Grapple In The Temple. I feel that Michigan has world class Jiu-jitsu Academies, but people around the USA don’t really know about it. So, I want to showcase Michigan’s JJ through GITT. We have some really tough competitors and I’m sure that the viewers both at the event and at home that will watch the event via Flo Grappling will not be disappointed on September 24th.
The important thing I learned with running smaller events is organization. Prior to the event everything has to be well organized. If you don’t have everything in order the event will not run smoothly.”
The ruleset of the event is similar to that of Fight2Win in that the judging process is based on competitor aggression.
