Weight issues were some of the reasons the UFC may have been reluctant to let Mackenzie Dern into the promotion.

“I think if I had better success on the weight cut earlier, and learned what was best for me earlier, maybe I could have been in the UFC earlier,” Dern said last year.

Last weekend at UFC 222, Mackenzie proved once and for all that she could make weight in the UFC’s strawweight division when she successfully weighed in for her match against Ashley Yoder. Dern would later win the fight via split decision.

The undefeated MMA star and Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion also said she was never afraid of weighing over the strawweight division’s 116-pond limit.

“I had two pounds left the night before, so in my mind I was like, ‘No, I’m going to make 116,” she told Ariel Helwani on this week’s episode of The MMA Hour.
