Sophia McDermott Drysdale: Jiu Jitsu Champion And Fitness Coach


Sophia McDermott Drysdale is considered one of the top grapplers of her generation. She is a 4-time pan American Jiu Jitsu Champion and she is also famous for doing an important work in the fitness industry.

Early life
Sophia Drysdale has Australian ancestry. She was born in Melbourne-Australia on May 31 1979. She spent her early life in this country and was interested in sports from an early age. Sophia practiced a number of sports and eventually concentrated on gymnastics. She was a skillful gymnast and was part of the elite squad of her gym.

From gymnast to grappler
At age 21, the promising gymnast had a shoulder injury and this ended her promising career as a gymnast. At this point in her life, Sophia looked for an alternative and found it in Jiu Jitsu. She started Jiu Jitsu in Australia and earned her brown and blue belts here. She won the Pan American Jiu Jitsu Championship for three consecutive years (2005, 2006 and 2007).

The move to America
Sophia moved to America shortly after winning her third Pan American Jiu Jitsu Championship in 2007. She joined Robert Drysdale’s gym and became a successful black belt under the guidance of this great coach.
