Ricardo de la Riva, a sixth degree BJJ black belt, said recently in a GracieMag interview that dedication and respect are what is necessary to become a blue belt. When BJJ students dedicate themselves to their art, de la Riva claims, they gain respect for themselves, their fellow students, and their instructors. This helps them to progress faster.
De la Riva also commented on how the current rule system in BJJ has improved since the time he competed. Now, he says, the scoring is much clearer, which makes for a more fan-friendly experience and helps the fighters and officials perform their best.
