McGregor Poirier Trilogy Fight Aimed for Summer, 2021

One of the most explosive fights of the new year is looking to get a sequel.

Former two division champion Conor McGregor and former interim lightweight champion Dusitn Poirier may be completing their much lauded trilogy in a handful of months, according to UFC President Dana White.

“They both want it,” White said during a press conference to MMA Junkie earlier today. “When you’ve got two guys who want the trilogy as bad as those two [McGregor and Poirier] you try to make it happen.” When pressed for a date, White claimed it would happen this summer.

Defeating McGregor in an explosive TKO finish in their last bout at UFC 257, Poirier has been on a quest to launch himself back into title contention and put his rival in the rear view.

Conversely, McGregor has tried to recapture his “Mystic Mac” status following an unsuccessful showing against the now retired GOAT contender, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Failing to capitalize on a first round KO against Cowboy Cerrone in 2020 and a litany of sexual harassment lawsuits, many have questioned McGregor’s commitment to the fight game.

Whatever the outcome, the winner of this third bout would have huge bargaining power for a title shot in the near future. And a good enough showing might be enough to lure the eagle (Nurmagomedov) out of his lofty nest.

The JJT will continue to follow this story as it develops.
