The ‘Other’ Straight Arm Lock

I bet you that if I ask a BJJ guy to show me a straight armlock, he will bust out the “juji gatame” or standard arm lock from mount or guard.

Did you know there is a second powerful and lesser known arm lock – aka, ude gatame? Instead of the hip applying the force, as in the more popular variation, the clasped hands apply the pressure to the opponent’s elbow.

Here are four ways to apply the “other” straight arm lock.

Marcelo Garcia is the master of this armlock from butterfly guard.

Stephan Kesting shows this from the side control position.

Here is the mount attack. This can work against a defensive opponent even if they know that it is coming!

Here is an old school, Carlson Gracie attack: hand in the collar guard.
